Scope of Work

Supply and Installation of Gas Turbine Inlet Air Cooling System for 10 GE type 7001EA gas turbine generating sets at Riyadh – PP8. The scope of work includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning.

Project Goals

To improve the output power of 10 GE type 7001EA gas turbine generating sets by 30%. Total improvement is 177MW at 50°C ambient.

Project Data

Preliminary Acceptance : 22/06/2005
Final Acceptance : 25/09/2005

Project Description

  • The system is a full storage thermal energy system designed to have two main cycles of operation during a 24 hour period.

     - Build cycle, 18 hours at 48°C
     - Burn cycle, 6 hours at 50°C
  • TIAC system; simulates turbine winter operating conditions (higher power output) by lowering the temperature of the air entering the turbine.
  • TES System; allows owner to “build” energy storage during off-peak periods and “burn” this stored energy during peak periods.
  • The system is designed to cool the inlet air for 10 turbines from 50°C ambient and 10%RH to 13°C entering the turbine, TIAC System improves thermal efficiency.
  • The generator inlet air will be cooled to 30°C in order to cater for the excess load generating at 50°C ambient.

Electrical Services

  • Carrying out double banking modification of two existing feeders from substation 8061 and 8072 which will feed two 3 winding 30MVA transformers 132/4.16/4.16
  • Supplying 2 x 30MVA 132/4.16kV power transformers.
  • Supplying medium voltage system consisting of 20 breakers, including all protection relays.
  • Supplying 4 x 2MVA 4.16/0.48kV station transformers.
  • Supplying low voltage MCCs including variable speed drives.
  • All needed controls including DCS.
